ENHANCING MRV CAPACITY FOR JURSIDICTIONAL REDD+ PROGRAMS

With support from the GCF Fund in 2014, the Brazilian States of Acre and Mato Grosso worked with Earth Innovation Institute, the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) and Woods Hole Research Center to enhance their technical capacity to measure and monitor greenhouse gas emissions from tropical deforestation. The project enabled major advances for the science and technology of Tier 2 and 3 forest carbon monitoring and mapping, and increased the states’ capacities to assimilate and use this state‐of‐the art technology and data. Trainings provided important continuity to past capacity‐building activities, and offered a venue for north‐south and south‐south collaboration between civil society organizations and Acre and Mato Grosso.

Highlights from the projects include:

  • New 30m wall‐to‐wall forest carbon maps that for the first time are at the sameresolution as the best available deforestation data have been made available to the states
  • A user‐friendly, online forest carbon and deforestation monitoring tool (CCAL) that allows for easy reporting and analysis with customization for use in state REDD+ programs
  • A simplified online monitoring tool to support a multi‐sector deforestation agreement inthe Brazilian Amazon, and works to align state and national policies, sustainable supply chain initiatives, and the international climate regime including REDD+
  • Training for state technicians in state‐of‐the‐art forest carbon mapping science to promote the assimilation of the 30m maps and the online monitoring tools.
  • A new alliance between Acre and the Peruvian states to work together to build low emissionrural development programs with robust monitoring systems

An overview of the new spatially explicit map of aboveground live woody biomass (AGB) for the Xingu river basin. The report provides a methodological overview and summary of the results of integrating new field plot measurements, spaceborne LiDAR (GLAS), and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery.
