Chiapas - Campeche
The Construction of a Monitoring System of Factors of Emission Adapted to the Local Conditions of the States of Campeche and Chiapas.
In Mexico, 2015, the states of Chiapas and Campeche worked with Ecologic Development Fund, UNICACH, Pronatura Yucatan, Ecosur, Cooperativa AMBIO, HC Paisajismo, UNAM and local communities to enhance state wide systems for monitoring and measuring emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. Built with a participatory approach, the project actively engaged local researchers, national forestry commission staff, local communities, state level technicians, and local civil society members. Through the project, collaborators created a technical report on carbon measurement that improves upon existing knowledge and data of the current MRV system and advanced forest carbon reporting by developing locally appropriate allometric equations. The project also pushed innovative boundaries by piloting methodologies for data collection and biomass mapping.
Highlights from the projects include:
- Enhanced dialogue and alignment with national level actors through the establishment and strengthening of state level technical MRV groups.
- Development of regionally appropriate allometric equations for rainforests in Calakmul (Campeche) and the Lancondon jungle (Chiapas), allowing progress towards tier 3 forest carbon reporting.
- Training of local community members in the estimation of forest biomass, with the vision of integrating them into national forest monitoring systems.
